Description
Classical - Making Our Dreams Come TrueSan Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus presents the greatest hits from the old masters and stunning new works by today’s modern maestros: a night of glamour and gaiety at San Francisco’s most elegant concert hall.
Concert Making Our Dreams Come True with special guests Community Women's Orchestra and Vance Y. George. The chorus’ spring concert, Making Our Dreams Come True, marks the historic premiere of Safeer el-Layl (translation: Ambassador of the Night) "an impassioned plea for personal liberation sung in a language that is spoken in parts of the world where such rights are often sacrificed," says the composer, Ilyas Iliya, a gay Lebanese man who moved to San Francisco in 1991. The composition, another ‘musical first’ for the chorus, combines the tradition of choral music with melodic language taken from the Lebanese tradition of poetry and song dating from the 7th century. "Not only that," states Iliya, "it will be sung by a gay-identified chorus in modern colloquial Arabic," adding, "The structure of the melody builds with increasing ornamentation and haunting polyphonic harmonies."
