Voice of Roma and the Brass Liberation Orchestra kick off their Creative Works Fund grant collaboration with an evening of traditional Romani ("Gypsy") and contemporary brass/street band music on Sunday November 29 at Amnesia , 853 Valencia St, San Francisco, at 8 pm.
Rumen "Sali" Shopov (Edessa), Peter Jaques (Brass Menazeri), and ??? friends combine forces to bring you to your feet with the intricate subtitles of authentic Balkan music, while the Brass Liberation Orchestra will have your fist in the air with their riot-worthy hornucopia of New Orleans second line, afro-beat and balkan brass tunes. Expect the musicians to spill into the audience, as there will be more horns than Amnesia's stage can hold. The occasion? A celebration of "Mahala", or neighborhood community, shared politics and musical culture.
Voice of Roma [www.voiceofroma.com/] works to promote Romani cultural arts and traditions in a way that counters both romanticized and negative "Gypsy" stereotypes, and to heighten awareness of human rights issues faced by Roma in the world today. VOR also supports efforts by Roma to build and maintain their communities, improve their lives, and to strengthen the Romani voice both nationally and internationally. The group organizes and implements cultural arts, educational, economic development, and charitable projects for and about Roma. The organization is the recent recipient of a Haas Foundation Creative Works Grant to compose new music and work with the BLO to teach and spread traditional songs.
The Brass Liberation Orchestra [brassliberation.org] is a raucous street band that performs at community events, demonstrations and benefits for progressive causes. Awarded "Best Blast of Justice" in the Bay Guardian's 2009 Best of the Bay, the 20+ member igroup ncludes horns, percussion and dancers, draws on a wide variety of influences, including Balkan and New Orleans brass bands, Afro-beat, historic songs of struggle, and contemporary pop music. The members of the band receive no pay for their performances, but use funds raised at their occasional club gigs for rehearsal space, travel, instrument maintenance, and support of a sister band in New Orleans.
