Description
There's a haunting, epic quality to San Jose's Lights Become Stars that at first recalls exciting but totally bummed-out bands from the early '80s like Joy Division and Bauhaus. Certainly Ed Havel's vocals go a long way toward creating that mood, but the creeping atmospherics from the rest of the band don't hurt. What's remarkable is that given a closer listen, the band actually promotes a fairly relentless positivism, lyrical flickers of light in a swirling void. The guitars, too, tend to rise up in the choruses, proving that if you can't win 'em all, at least you can dance in the dark. This is a matinee show; Horse Thief also performs. - Steve Palopoli sanjose.com
