Description
Michael Garlington's work has been described as "Leave it to Beaver" meets David Lynch.Garlington is an internationally renowned photographer, artist, & sculptor who has brought intricately detailed, fantastical Photochapels to the Burning Man playa. His 2015 offering, Totem of Confessions, housed the ashes of LSD advocate Timothy Leary, processed into the Photochapel by friend Susan Sarandon. Influenced by ancient Khmer and Vedic architecture, the 50-foot assemblage was described by the Guardian as "gothic, baroque, and nightmarish."
"It was actually through photography that I found I was a sculptor," Garlington muses. "I created environments in my photographs." After capturing just a few film snapshots, Garlington destroyed the fantastical environments-- in a Kaprow-inspired sort of Happening.
His current body of work—LET IT BURN—showcases these sculputed, otherworldly environments inside intricate “photosculptures.” Framed sculptued by Garlington and partner Natalia Bertotti Bask in the beauty of black-and-white photography in assemblage with salvaged mixed media.
Michael Garlington's sculptures have been funded by the Black Rock Art Foundation at Burning Man: He burned E G O on the sand in collaboration with Laura Klimpton (2012) / constructed a Photo Chapel (2013) / built a Totem of Confessions (2015).
