SF Funk Fest is back! In November 2008, Sunset Promotions brings back the club run dedicated to greater appreciation of "THE FUNK" as America's 3rd Great Art Form.

On Saturday, November 22nd, we welcome Holland nufunk stars KRAAK & SMAAK (Ultra Records) to play their first live band performance in SF in more than 2 years at the Independent

Holland is known for many things, but "funk" has never been one of them... until now. Three brilliant musicians,with illustrious careers in Dutch pop music, Mark Kneppers, Oscar de Jong and Wilm Plug joined together in 2003 to develop a new project. Little did they know at the time that they would be catalysts for an international movement to bring funky music back into danceclubs. Their first single "Money in the Bag" incorprated samples from some of Kneppers 40,000+ records, Plug's brilliant orchestration, and De Jong's otherworldly keyboard skills. The track was an instant classic, sending shockwaves as far as San Francisco, where it became a staple of SF danceclub Djs, long-since oversaturated with vapid electronica. Before they knew it, the trio had a Dutch hit and impetus to form a band to create and play more music along the lines they had touched on "Money in the Bag". The album "Boogie Angst" soon followed, picked up by connossieur labels Quango and Jalapeno, it solidified their status as one of the true groundbreaking acts in dance music. Now in demand for remix work and an intense touring schedule,m the project morphed into two acts, a live show of as many as 8 musicians playing their own cuts and a DJ set featuring Kneppers and Dutch ringer Sargon Roeloffs. These two formats, equally impressive in person allowed the project to make over 200 appearances, including such high-profile events as Coachella, Glastonberry, and Rothbury festivals. Through that time, the DJ set made 4 spectacular appearances in San Francisco and their 2006 live-band performance at Mighty was considered one of the highlights of the SF concert season. Remixes for Jamiroquai, Bitter:Sweet, Fort Knox 5, and Ikon interspersed with continued singles like the dancefloor killer "Funk Ass Rotator" while they worked on a follow-up album to Boogie Angst.

2008 brings that follow-up and success heretofore unseen in an electro-funk act since the days of Jamiroquai. "Plastic People" was lauded on Perez Hilton's world-famous weblog long before the album touched ground in the States, and propelled its first single "Squeeze Me" to the top of the Dutch pop charts. The album was just released stateside by uber-electronic label ULTRA and has received rave reviews. And to make matters even better, MTV Europe recently nominated Kraak & Smaak as "Best Dutch Band" and Rhapsody featured Kraak & Smaak in a commercial alongside David Bowie and Adele. Now the live band is on its way back to the States for a 12-show national tour culminating in their SF Funk Festival appearance at the Independent on November 22. The band features Plug on turntables, De JOng on keys, plus scintillating vocalist Rose, famous Dutch MC and vocalist Seb, bassist Marc and master drummer Andre. Holland’s breakthrough act KRAAK & SMAAK is getting ready to rock North America as a full band in support of their latest album PLASTIC PEOPLE out now on ULTRA Records. On November 6 at Eighteenth Street Lounge in Washington D.C., they’ll kick off their 14-show date tour that will take them through many major markets throughout the U.S. and into Canada in support of the album.

Although KRAAK & SMAAK originally started out as a studio project for the founding members Oscar De Jong, Mark Kneppers & Wim Plug, it quickly became one of the hottest live properties in electronic music. The additional live band members of Andre Kemp (drummer), Rose Spearman (vocalist), Sebastian van der berg (MC) and Marc Baronner (bass)--coupled with the keyboards, FX and percussion played by the band themselves--are a formidable slice of funk on the dance floor.
