Description

Stylisically eclectic singer/songwriter Kat Edmonson has a compelling backstory for her latest album, Old Fashioned Gal. The creative jazz-rooted artist explains how the 11 originals on her fourth and most recent album make up the components of a proper movie musical that she first concocted while under the weather:

"I was sick in bed for days watching old films on Turner Classic Movies and, eventually, I got inspired and began to write," she says. "I would watch one movie and then stop to work on a song and then turn on another movie…I wrote the majority of the album this way. At some point in this process, I started imagining scenes for a film that corresponded with my music and I envisioned my songs being sung by…certain characters."

A Houston native, Edmonson was raised on vintage films and the Great American Songbook before exploring alternative music styles when she reached her 'tweens and teens. She evolved her signature style in Austin's local club circuit before self-releasing Take To The Sky in 2009. Edmonson has toured the US, Europe and Japan sharing the stage with Lyle Lovett, Chris Isaak, Gary Clark, Jr., Jaime Cullum, Shawn Colvin, Smokey Robinson, George Benson, Michael Kiwanuka, Nick Lowe and Willie Nelson. She is now on tour in promotion of Old Fashioned Gal.
