Description
Examine the many ways in which the sheer physicality of paint has been used in contemporary art. The exhibition showcases works drawn from SJMA’s own collection of 20th- and 21st-century art. From buttery brushstrokes to massive, sculptural build-ups of surfaces, the paintings on view all demonstrate how the visceral qualities of paint, its texture, its color, inspire the final work of art. The exhibition of 19 paintings dating from the 1950s includes works by Elmer Bischoff, Joan Brown, John DiPaolo, Sam Gilliam, James Hayward, Wally Hedrick Paul Jenkins, Karl Kasten, Jeffrey Keith, James Kelly, Gordon Onslow-Ford, John Saccaro, Sam Tchakalian and Phe Ruiz.
