Description

Ishika Seth presents a series of works exploring thoughts of identity, sexuality, co-dependancy, nostalgia, immigration and support. Also features guest choreographers Suzanne Beahrs and PJ Johnson.

U Dance Electra presents presents Emptee V. a sassy, sharp and vibrant interpretation of the MTV music videos from the Eighties. The pulsating New Wave/Electro music by The Normal & The System, the flashy bright costumes, runway set and striking yet at times minimal choreography give off the decadence of self indulgence and will transport the audience to a time when the Western world was more flamboyant, using boom boxes as props as many people did in the Eighties. Emptee V. is fashioned with love and fascination for the 1980’s.

Ishika Seth is an independent choreographer who has showcased her work at the MAD BAD Festival, SJ Choreoproject Awards, Women on the Way Festival, Dance IS Festival, Translations: An intersection of race, gender & sexuality, Collaboration and Raw & Uncut. She has also been an artist-in-residence at The Garage. Ishika attained her BA in Dance from San Jose State University studying with Fred Mathews & Gary Masters. She also attended the American Dance Festival in 2005 & 2006, studying with Douglas Nielson, David Dorfman and Miguel Gutierrez. Before coming to the U.S. 4 years ago, Ishika was in India where she completed her BA in English Literature in New Delhi and trained in Indian Contemporary Dance, Mayurbhanj Chhau and yoga. She has performed with Monica Mark (U Dance Electra) and Irva Hetrz-Picciotto (HerPic productions). She also currently teaches and performs for Naach.

U Dance Electra has performed consistently around the Bay Area at various festivals and venues, including the Women on the way Festival at Shotwell Studios in 2007 & The Garage in 2008. U Dance Electra’s mission is to bring current, bold and stimulating works of art to the field of dance, encouraging each dancer to reach for new heights. Our choreography emphasizes strong technical foundations, rhythmical creativity and a performance quality like no other. U Dance Electra’s vision is to inspire our multicultural audiences when we hit the stage, with our fresh and magnetic ultra-modern dance! We envision our audiences connecting with our professional work on a visceral level and to be inspired to dance themselves.

Suzanne Beahrs currently performs with Ishika Seth, Herpic Performances, and in her own work. Before enjoying the full Bay Area dance scene, she studied at London Contemporary Dance School and UC Berkeley. Beahrs has created a new untitled trio that explores the freedom discovered by bypassing life's obstacles.

SPF (summer performance festival) is an annual program that features both veteran and emerging artists in the fields of dance, multi-media and theatre. The festival is a two-month celebration that reflects the broad spectrum of contemporary performance in the Bay Area.

SAFEhouse for the Performing Arts (Saving Art From Extinction) @ The Garage is a non-profit arts presenting organization that specializes in incubating new performing art through residencies, workshops and performance. The Garage was recently selected as Best of the Bay in San Francisco Magazine and is the home of the raw & uncut performance showcase, RAW (resident artists’ workshop), SPF and AIRspace (queer performing artists residency program).
