Description
Walt Whitman blew up what qualified as poetry. The bearded savant's long loping lines of verse rejected the rigidity of typical constructions and wandered around in the most private, salient parts of the human condition. So when high schoolers tackle it, it’s best to do it in pairs. In this minimalist play, the popular jock Anthony shows up unexpectedly at the door of Caroline, a cynical girl who’s been at home with a liver disease for months. They hack through Whitman’s masterpiece "Leaves of Grass," chow down on waffle fries and start to fall for each other after a shocking twist forces them to confront their mortality. (JF)
