String band, the Hopeful Romantics have one foot in the past, singing sweet country harmonies with a bit of a twang, but they give their classic Americana a modern feel by taking inspiration also from such innovative alt-country songwriters like Gillian Welch and Neko Case. This five-piece ensemble mix it up with guitars, a mandolin, fiddle and an upright bass, telling little stories in song format, like they did in the good old days. It's authentic, yet it's glaringly obvious these are some city slickers, which isn't a bad thing.
