Abhinaya Dance Company of San Jose, the Bay Area’s premier South Indian classical dance company, announces their fall production, GANDHI directed and choreographed by Mythili Kumar and Rasika Kumar; and featuring the Abhinaya Dance Company of San José, accompanied by live music by master musicians.
In May 1995 to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948), Abhinaya premiered ‘Gandhi-the Mahatma’ portraying key events in his life that transformed him into a 'Mahatma' (great soul). Today, sixty-four years after his death, his inspired movements for non-violence, civil rights, and religious tolerance still finds relevance in this modern age.
For its Fall 2012 production, Abhinaya presents ‘Gandhi’ with new choreography by Mythili Kumar (Artistic Director), and Rasika Kumar (principal dancer and choreographer) to reiterate Gandhi’s message of civil disobedience as an alternative to violent resistance. Through the voice of Manubhen his grand-niece who reminisces about Gandhi, the dance-theater production presents vivid portrayals of Gandhi’s life, his inspirational encounters, and events that led him to becoming a world figure. His childhood fears, the temptations of his youth, his struggles in South Africa, his civil disobedience movement against the British in India, and his untiring efforts to unify the religious groups in India are powerful scenes portrayed through the classical dance style of Bharatanatyam.
