Description

July 23-August 7, 2016, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 7:30 pm

The San Francisco Shakespeare Festival's 34th season of Free Shakespeare in the Park presents 'The Winter's Tale'. Music, dance, and a trio of delightful clowns make this show a treat for the whole family.

Luminous and heartbreaking, tragic and gloriously funny, 'The Winter's Tale' is the crowning achievement of Shakespeare's late career, a magical story that swoops across continents, generations, and genres to its bittersweet and beautiful conclusion. King Leontes of Sicilia trusts his own paranoid beliefs against all evidence to the contrary, plunging his kingdom into a chain of tragedies - culminating in Shakespeare's most famous stage direction, "Exit pursued by a Bear." But in the play's darkest hour, a baby girl survives to grow up in the happy kingdom of Bohemia, ignorant of her noble past. Thanks to the wisdom of the Lady Paulina and the magic of theatre, Leontes learns that not all losses can be reversed, but redemption is possible.

Audiences can further their enjoyment of this production by attending a 15-minute Green Show, 30 minutes before the performance. "The Shakes-Bears' Picnic" provides context and historical background for the play in a fun, family-friendly format.

No tickets or reservations are needed for these complimentary shows. Bring your family, friends, a blanket, and a picnic to enjoy professional theater at no charge, in a beautiful park setting!

"This play combines many beloved elements of Shakespeare's canon - tragedy, star-crossed lovers, rustic clowns, and magic" says Rebecca J. Ennals, Artistic Director of San Francisco Shakespeare Festival. "Despite these familiar elements, the play is entirely new and exciting and dares to tell an epic tale across 16 years. We hope this production awakes your faith in the theatre and encourages you to return again and again."
