The First Murphy House was constructed in 1902 by 17-year-old Michael J. Murphy for his family. It was the first of many cottages designed and built by him, and throughout his career he had a significant influence on the character and architecture of the village of Carmel. In 1990, when the little cottage was in danger of being demolished, the First Murphy House Committee was formed under the auspices of the Carmel Heritage Society. They restored the house, and it now serves as the Society's headquarters. It is open to the public Wednesday - Sunday from 1:00 to 4pm.
