Description

Sunnyvale Community Players is pleased to present Fiddler on the Roof, winner of 9 Tony awards in 1965, including Best Musical, Direction, and Book, and in 1972 was presented with a special Tony Award for the longest running musical in Broadway history. With music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and book by Joseph Stein, Fiddler on the Roof is based on Tevye the Dairyman and other tales by author Sholem Aleichem. The story, set in the Pale of Settlement of Imperial Russia in 1905, centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions as outside influences encroach upon the family's lives. He must cope both with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters, who wish to marry for love – each one's choice of a husband moves further away from the customs of his faith – and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village.

“Fiddler on the Roof is timeless,” co-director and SCP Artistic Director Matt Welch explains. “However, in the world's new political climate, it has become frighteningly timely. Tevye is facing turbulent times and having to make very difficult decisions. Anataveka no longer seems such a faraway place. People are still being discriminated against based on their religion. People are being forced out of their homelands by war and destruction. Just as we sympathize with this village, as directors, we hope you will also sympathize with everyone, worldwide, trying to find their balance in a rapidly changing world.”

“I too have been humbled at just how topical Fiddler on the Roof has become again,” adds co-director and SCP President Steve Shapiro. “Naturally, Matt and I have felt a responsibility to address this directly in how we’re staging the show. At the same time, my own foray into the world of Anatevka has been a very relatable story about a father and his kids. Beneath all his bluster and joie de vivre, Tevye is a Dad who loves his daughters. As a father of two daughters myself, I know what it means to look into the eyes of your children and realize that you’ll do everything in your power to keep them happy. It is this struggle between Tevye’s love for his daughters and his adherence to tradition that propels the story forward in both joyous and tragic directions. This theme of tradition and the generational divide is relatable by families everywhere and one of the reasons the show has been so beloved around the world for over 50 years.”

SCP is also proud to dedicate its production of Fiddler on the Roof to raising awareness and funding for HIAS, the global Jewish nonprofit that protects refugees—including women and children, and ethnic, religious, and sexual minorities—whose lives are in danger for being who they are. Donations will be collected during the run of this production on behalf of HIAS to help support its programs.
