Description

The streets of downtown San Jose are being taken over by dancers on the weekend of September 18th and 19th between 11am and 5pm. Starting on Market and San Carlos outside the Convention Center and spanning as far down as St. James Park, this outdoor festival is the first of its kind for San Jose.

Dance in Transit, a site-specific outdoor festival, was created to celebrate emerging dance artists from the South Bay, the downtown San Jose community, and public transit. The mission of the festival is to spread dance culture beyond the stage and into everyday places.

The creators, recent San Jose State graduates Natalie Quilici and Claire Alexander, have been working to bring free dance to public spaces for almost a year now. "The idea was simple," Claire Alexander states. "We want to show people that dance can be more than what they see on TV. San Jose is the 10th largest city in the nation, why shouldn't it be progressive in its arts?"

The festival will include South Bay artists RUGGED Dance Company, The Collaborative, Necrocosm, and other dance groups. "It benefits everyone," Quilici explains. "It brings people into downtown, it supports and promotes the light rail and all of the businesses along the line, and it lets people who wouldn't normally get to experience modern dance do so for the cost of a light rail ticket. Downtown San Jose has great art venues and festivals like Left Coast Live, First Fridays, and the San Jose Jazz Festival, but we want to contribute. Dancers have a place in San Jose also."

Dance in Transit is a 90-minute, full-length modern dance concert. Tours begin at 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday at the Convention Center Light Rail Station.
