Description
The king of the NorCal chiptune scene plays a free show in Cupertino this week, which also features fellow chip artists from Santa Cruz (the Slime Girls), Milwaukee (Awkward Terrible) and New York (Minusbaby). The reason that Crashfaster (aka Morgan Tucker) has stayed at the center of this 8-bit, Game Boy-obsessed electronic genre was obvious at the recent California Extreme Expo in Santa Clara, and at Rockage in February: the guy doesn't just come in, play his set and leave. He was up in front in the crowd, supporting and comparing notes with his fellow artists the whole time. His own sound—NES drenched in dance beats and epic synth—has evolved as he's incorporated a live band, and in both his music and his talent for showcasing others, he continues to prove the chip sound is more than just a novelty. - Steve Palopoli sanjose.com
