Description

Corpus Christi by Terrence McNally

Playing in San Francisco for three performances only.

Terrance McNally's Corpus Christi is a retelling of the Jesus Story with Jesus living as a gay man in 1950s in Corpus Christi, Texas. This production has toured internationally for two years with critical acclaim, reclaiming the show's lost message of Inclusive Love for all people. Typically performed by 13 young men, this produciton continues to celebrate the plays message by casting both men and women of a large age range, ethnic backgrounds, varying religious beliefs and all walks of life. This production will open off-Broadway in October.

Joshua is a tormented boy growing up in a conservative and closed minded environment. He struggles to find his way, chooses a path of truth and unconditional love for all and ultimately gives his life for the freedom to love.
108 productions has spent over two years touring this production nationally and abroad to great acclaim, receiving awards, attended by thousands and reclaiming the shows lost message: inclusive love for all people. Typically performed by thirteen young men, this production continues to celebrate the play's message of embracing diversity by casting both men and women of a large age range, varying religious beliefs and all walks of life.

Arguably Terrence McNally's most polarizing work, Corpus Christi will be touring the bay area for three final performances before it returns to the city of it's tumultuous birth in 1998. Back then the play opened to protests and bomb threats. Sadly, at that same time a true life tragedy was happening across the country. While Corpus Christi was in previews Matthew Shepard was beaten and tied to a fence in Wyoming. He was found days later barely clinging to and eventually lost his battle to survive but in his final moments was surrounded by loving family and friends. The night after he died Corpus Christi had it's official opening in New York City.

In the spirit of the show's message we have decided to donate profits to the Matthew Shepard Foundation focusing on their current "Erase Hate" campaign. The foundation is a testament to not only a mother and father's love for a child they lost to hate but an unconditional love that gives us hope even after someone is taken from us. It couldn't be a closer message than the one Corpus Christi gives us

After ten years how far have we come as a society?

Are we ready to open our minds and hearts to this retelling or will we once again face protests and untruths about the play?

Come see the play the Catholic League deemed blasphemous and Time magazine called one of the top ten plays of 1998.
We believe this play is a testament to the power of love and needs to be seen. If you are able, please distribute this to others you think would be interested or might benefit from the powerful message of this play.
