Description
Dr. Paul Davies debuts his original opera about a Belgian princess who would be the short-lived empress of Mexico before descending into the depths of dementia. Carlota's husband, Maximilian, recognized the futility of asking the Mexican people to bow down to a French-born King, but she was determined to ensure her husband kept wearing his crown. This insistence may have led to Maximilian's execution only three years into his reign, after which Carlota returned to Europe as a failed, and increasingly mad monarch. The piece is the culmination of over a decade of work to capture the essence of the late 19th century, the setting for this dramatic life deserving of its own opera.
