Dressed in black and looking every bit as somber as its namesake, Texas-based Blue October revels in minor-key pop-rock augmented by lead singer Justin Furstenfeld’s gravelly baritone vocals. Acts from the ’90s like Counting Crows and Live come to mind in terms of musical comparisons, although there’s a definite contemporary indie-rock flavor in the Blue October mix as well. The band’s latest album, Approaching Normal, finds the group approaching a new territory of professionalism, with five-time Grammy Award winning producer Steve Lillywhite (most famous for his work with U2) manning the control board.
