Sometimes a band comes along whose name is so epically awesome it almost seems beside the point to listen to their music. Jon Cougar Concentration Camp, say, or You Say Party! We Say Die!. But on the other hand, isn’t that even more reason to listen to them? In the case of Baby Seal Club, yeah. Their general sensibility is as offbeat and sly as their name. They won a North Bay Music Award for Best Indie Band last year, and good look classifying them beyond that most general of terms. Their cover of Nick Cave’s “Red Right Hand” is quirky art-rock, while “Straight Boys Spoonin’” is grittier and even weirder. As the latter title suggests, their lyrics alone are worth the price of admission.
