Description
Thumbscrew is the brainchild of freewheeling, cutting-edge improvisors Mary Halvorson, Michael Formanek and Tomas Fujiwara. The three first worked together as the rhythm section for the Taylor Ho Bynum Sextet where they developed a creative musical kinship. In Thumbscrew, with Halvorson on guitar; Formanek on bass and Fujiwara on drums, they have established a cooperative vehicle to feature their music in a way that is distinct from their individual projects. The trio's compositional approach is open-ended and fluid, allowing each member full freedom to guide the sonic interplay. Their debut CD, Thumbscrew, received a gushing 4 ½ stars from DownBeat.
