RAWdance presents the CONCEPT series: 12On September 1st & 2nd, RAWdance will present the 12th installation of the CONCEPT series, the informal and intimate salon of contemporary dance.Focusing on intimacy and innovation, the series presents veteran and emerging talent from the Bay Area dance world, up-close and personal in a cozy atmosphere. With its relaxed salon environment and intriguing artist line-ups, the CONCEPT series was named "Best Way to Sample S.F.s Contemporary Dance Scene" by SF's Weekly's 2012 Best of Awards.
For the CONCEPT series: 12, RAWdance will reexamine "Schematic Process" (2005), described as "fascinat[ing] with its stiff-legged, angular and robotic verticality, the formality of its design and the purity of its execution." (Dance View) RAWdance will also share early explorations from "Burn In", the company's current project, which draws inspiration from film noir, subliminal messaging, Rorschach tests and the history of modern psychology.
Five guest artists will share the program with RAWdance. The dance theater pair, Smith/Wymore Disappearing Acts, will be sharing excerpts from a new duet exploring our relationship to technology as a means for communication and connection. Choreographer Chris Black will offer a new solo combining humor, pathos and feats of strength. Yayoi Kambara, a long-standing member of ODC/Dance, is creating a new duet for two men. Palanza Dance will share an excerpt from "hiding in tiny places" a contemporary version of Hans Christian Andersen's "Thumbelina". And detour dance will perform a duet from their "Imitations of Intimacy".
