Description
Minsky Duo makes its Red Poppy debut with an all-Russian/Soviet program that includes the first San Francisco performance of living composer Nikolai Kapustin’s rollicking “Sonata for Violin and Piano,” Prokofiev’s “Violin Sonata No. 1 in F minor” (described by the composer as "wind whistling through a graveyard"), Tchaikovsky's beautifully lyric “Meditation,” Scriabin's explosive “Piano Sonata No. 4,” and Schnittke’s recently-discovered “Fuga for Solo Violin.”Featuring:
Nato - violin
Monica Chew - piano
Monica Chew is a Bay Area pianist who prefers chamber music to concerti, Haydn to Mozart, and lately, Bartok above all things. She produces solo and collaborative concerts with a strong narrative arc.
Violinist Nathanael Bartley (Nato) made his solo orchestral debut at five and was awarded a career scholarship and the loan of a Nicolo Amati violin at the age of nine. He went on to win prizes at the International Menuhin Competition for Young Violinists, the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal’s Standard Life Competition (1990, 1992, 1994), the International Beethoven Competition, and the International J.S. Bach Competition. He was a laureate of the 2012 Canada Council of the Arts Musical Instrument Bank Competition.
