Description

Join us for a festival dedicated to composer Elliott Carter. Take a weekend to immerse yourself in the genius and complexity of this two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, who turns 100 years old on December 11, 2009. Carter's life and work are on the continuum of contemporary American innovation, which includes his mentors Charles Ives, Walter Piston and Nadia Boulanger, as well as his own legacy. Music Historian-in-Residence Robert Greenberg unlocks Carter's work and leads a cadre of of Carter specialists in the exploration of the complete string quartets and piano works. Ursula Oppens, a long-time Carter muse and collaborator, is the grand master of contemporary music for piano. The exuberant young Pacifica Quartet emblazons Carter's prolific chamber music with a fresh understanding and excitement. This festival promises to be "a notably audience-friendly presentation of a composer who has never been thought of as audience friendly in the leat." (New York Times)
