Description
Gilbert Draper’s photography knowledge stretches back to his youth as an assistant to a local photographer, where he learned the basic visual elements in composing unique and engaging images. Following this initial explosion of interest, Draper created a dark room in his basement, where he was able to develop film and print manually. Draper recalls that, “Once I watched images come up in the developer, I was hooked for life.”It was this dedication to the craft that led him to enroll in Ansel Adams’ prestigious workshop at Yosemite. This life-changing opportunity was shaped predominantly through the instruction of Ansel Adams himself as well as other notable photographers such as Morley Baer, Arnold Newman and Ted Orland. At the workshop, Draper was introduced to new and experimental ways to visualize images. It was Adams’ idea to look at photography with a nod to musical foundations that really resonated with Draper; the ability to envision the negative as the composite and the print as the performance is something that Draper considers in every photograph he shoots.
It is with this impressive background in mind that Draper arrives at Little House ready to pass on his skills and expertise. The six-week intensive workshop will offer logistical topics such as manual camera functions and operations as well as examine the creativity and know-how behind the photographer’s greatest asset: his own eye. The class aims to teach the foundations of composing memorable images in addition to passing along indispensable knowledge that can only be found in the level of experience that a photographer like Draper exhibits. The class will intentionally be kept small to aid constructive criticism and interaction between participants.
