The sign was once the pedestal for Futurama Lanes, a congenial place where one could bowl a few games, and watch racy fashion shows at lunch. That was twenty years ago. The primary structure of the sign was saved, but the Futurama "letters" have been stripped away to be replaced with pallid fonts advertising Safeway and Linen 'N Things.

I know a man whose heart was shattered by a model who did luncheon fashion shows here in the 1960's. A redhead she was. After the inevitable breakup, the young man, a student attending a San Jose high school, neglected his studies and began playing pool at Westside Billiards. (He claims the joint was called Westside Joe's back then.) Distraught, his life swung wildly out of control, and finally, in an act of sheer desperation, he went to work for Lockheed in Sunnyvale. Kyrie eleison.

A verse from The Shooting of Dan McGrew by Robert Service
from The Spell of the Yukon

Then on a sudden the music changed, so soft
that you scarce could hear;
But you felt that your life had been looted clean
of all that it once held dear;
That someone had stolen the woman you loved;
that her love was a devil's lie;
That your guts were gone, and the best for you
was to crawl away and die.
