What makes the Understudies great isn't that they are reinventing hip-hop. This East Bay crew plays some impressive alternative rap, mixing classic boom-bap beats with modern cutting-edge loops, but what they really bring to the genre is excitement. The immediacy in their delivery and group interplay is so fresh it's infectious. These guys really do function well as a collective, which makes you wish more rappers still performed in crews. They've put out five mixtapes together so far, and who knows how many solo releases between them.
