To say that Evan Dando is one of the best songwriters of his generation would sound preposterous to anyone who knows the Lemonheads only for, say, their hit cover of "Mrs. Robinson." And yet, over the course of his career—especially on the unofficial trilogy It's a Shame About Ray, Come on Feel the Lemonheads and Car Button Cloth—no one has so sublimely combined post-punk energy, alt-rock songcraft and pure pop like Evan Dando. Influenced not just by the heavy early indie rockers like Husker Du, but also by modern troubadours like Gram Parsons and Townes Van Zandt, Dando's music is both epic in its layers of sound and extremely personal in its lyrics.
