About The Fillmore

Purchase The Fillmore Tickets from TicketMaster The Fillmore was a dance hall operating under various names and managements - The Get Acquainted Society, Ambassador Dance Hall - through the 1930s, and a roller rink through the 1940s. In 1952, local entrepreneur Charles Sullivan began to book some of the biggest names in black music into The Fillmore. Sullivan booked West Coast tours for performers including James Brown, Bobby "Blue" Bland and Ike & Tina Turner. During the 1950s and 1960s, San Francisco gained a reputation as the preeminent Bohemian community in the United States. This reputation was never more deserved than during the mid-sixties, when the hipster of the Beat movement grew into the hippie of a more mainstream counter-culture. By the 1950s, the literary North Beach scene had given way to the emerging Haight-Ashbury, and radical politics had a niche across the Bay at the University of California at Berkeley. The line between culture and politics is easily blurred by young people in search of adventure.

Handsome Boy Modeling School
Schooled in the Finer Points
By matthew thayer (03/25/2005)

" Nathaniel Merriweather and Chest Rockwell haven't disappeared since we last heard from them in 1999. It's been a long time since the boys put out their first concept album, "So... How's Your Girl?". Chest begs to differ, "Between making the five-part video tape/DVD series, running and actually teaching at the Handsome Boy Institute, and the lecture tours -- now you're probably saying to yourself, "Wow, it came kinda quick." The quick is last years instructional long play, "White People", and our favorite teachers will lecture live at the Fillmore next week. "

An Artist, Decades in the Making
By Chris Ellis (02/18/2005)

" Everybody has moments in his or her musical memory where a song or band marks the moment of something big. I saw Byrne perform for the first time on television. For me, seeing him was this moment. No car crash, no hard break-up, no high school prom, just Byrne wiggling his arms and shaking his shoulders. "

Luna - Farewell Tour Image
Luna - Farewell Tour
Going Out With A Bang Rather Than A Whimper
By Jeremy Sampson (01/28/2005)

" Luna's show at The Fillmore on February 5th marks the band's final San Francisco appearance. In 2004, just before releasing its seventh and final album 'Rendezvous', the group decided to call it quits -- a sad occasion for the legion of Luna fans devoted to their refined brand of sublime dream pop. It's also a perfect opportunity to reflect on the legacy of this seminal band, which ends its 14-year career firmly entrenched in music history, and will best be remembered as an archetype of New York hipster cool.
