Description
The Breeders' newest album, "Mountain Battles," was recorded (separately) by Steve Albini, Erika Larson, Manny Nieto and Ben Mumphrey, and features the Deals (Kim & Kelley) plus "Title TK" vets Jose Mendeles and Mando Lopez, and was released in April 2008. "Mountain Battles" cemented Kim’s status as “one of the foremost pop technicians of her generation” (The Observer).
It is by turns goofy, groovy, melancholic, strung-out, catchy, atmospheric and, at times, impossibly lovely, the songs moving from offhand charm to emotional truth with casual grace. Scuffed-up noise balances against fraught silence; timeless structures rub against strange new shapes. And throughout, of course, there's Kim's unique voice - languid, urgent, bruised and beautiful. "Mountain Battles" captures all the bittersweet electricity of The Breeders’ classics – "Pod" and "Last Splash" – whilst managing to break fresh ground.
If you missed their sold-out show here at Slim's earlier this year, catch these two!
