Join us for a special concert featuring a rare collaboration between two of the world’s greatest percussionists, Jesus Diaz and Michael Spiro, along with the Stanford Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble. Together, they will be showcasing the role of percussion throughout the history of Afro-Latin jazz - from its African folkloric roots, through the Rumba traditions of Latin America, and finally to the ultra-modern Cuban Timba and Rumba Jazz sound. The repertoire consists of Mr. Diaz’s original funky salsa timba compositions and pure percussion/vocal pieces out of the Afro-Latin tradition, making for a truly unique evening. Michael Spiro is an internationally recognized percussionist, educator and recording artist. He is a ten-time Grammy nominee and has produced and performed on several seminal recordings in the Latin music genre, including the CD “Canto América” which was recently nominated for a 2017 Grammy in the Latin Jazz category. His performing and recording credits cover an array of internationally known artists: from such pop artists as David Byrne, Carlos Santana and Charlie Watts, to Latin music icons Eddie Palmieri, Israel Lopez (Cachao) and Richard Egues, to such jazz luminaries as Ella Fitzgerald, Bobby Hutcherson and McCoy Tyner. In 2011 Michael was appointed Associate Professor of Percussion at Indiana University, where he developed the curriculum for Latin music and culture in both the percussion and jazz departments. He has performed and produced several critically acclaimed instructional books and DVDs on percussion, and also launched two ground-breaking educational websites. Michael continues to be in demand as a guest artist at universities worldwide, and is a frequent presenter at national and statewide conventions of the Percussive Arts Society.

Cuban born percussionist and vocalist Jesus Diaz arrived in the United States from Habana in 1980. A multi-instrumentalist, arranger, and vocalist, Díaz has established himself as one of the most in-demand performers and studio musicians worldwide. As an educator, he has participated in several prominent clinics and workshops including Berklee College of Music, SFJAZZ, Stanford Jazz Workshop, Drummers Collective NY, and Jazz Camp West. In collaboration with his group Talking Drums, which includes fellow percussionists Michael Spiro and David Garibaldi, he has contributed to various Warner Brothers instructional books, videos, and websites. Mr. Diaz has performed, toured or recorded with such artists as Stevie Wonder, The Dave Mathews Band (DMB), Carlos Santana, Andy Narrell, Dizzy Gillespie, Bobbie Womack, Steve Coleman, Caribbean Jazz Project, Planet Drum,Pete Escovedo / Sheila E, José Luis Quintana (“Changuito”), Giovanni Hidalgo, Rebecca Mauleón and Omar Sosa.
