Happy Hour at Straits runs 3-6pm, with $3 Kirins and $3-$5 small plates. Translation: Before the hipster throngs invade, you can mingle with business types and moneyed shoppers, while gorging on seriously rippin' pan-Asian fusion concoctions. Just choose your vice: Roti Prata, sushi, ginger soda or the femme-fatale employees who scamper about the establishment with the greatest of ease.

Singaporean cuisine doesn't have to try to do fusion. It comes naturally since the food draws on Chinese, Thai, Indonesian, Nonya and Malaysian cuisines. Straits Restaurant was one of the first to serve this polyglot food in Silicon Valley and it remains an exemplar of the cuisine, whether you call it Asian fusion, Singaporean or just good food.
