A bastion of hipper-than-thou Santana Row socialites, Straits Restaurant is on the list of places to stop when the pain from high-end shopping in your Prada shoes is making it difficult to focus on which piece of over-the-top jewelry you plan on purchasing next. Sitting at the bar sipping specialty cocktails and noshing on tasty Singaporean cuisine, one can ogle the young, hip and potentially wealthy masses of Row-ites as they filter in to listen to a cosmopolitan mix of DJs and chat on their cell phones about how good they all look.

Asian. By night it's a jam-packed hipster hotspot; by day it's Singaporean chef Chris Yeo's latest chic fusion venue. Small plates such as roti prata, a griddled flatbread with curry dipping sauce, share the menu with entrees such as the lobster and shrimp pad thai. This stylish Santana Row restaurant is equally as popular among the after-work and late-night crowds as it is among weary shoppers seeking a mid-spree martini and a creative lunch.

Appealing small plates, an exciting list of signature cocktails and a rotating list of DJs make Straits a destination for Santana Row's well-heeled crowd nighttime crowd. On any given night groups of scantily-clad young women sip cocktails of house-made infusions and nibble on crab cakes and roti prada while well-dressed men ogle and order shots. It's hard to know if crowds come to Straits for the drinks, the food, or the people-watching, but there's always a wait at this Santana Row hotspot.

Straits Restaurant offers a mixture of fine dining and clubbing, with Singaporean fusion menu and a smorgasbord of top end alcohol. Wednesdays bring karaoke, and Thursdays and Fridays are when the place gets jam packed with a DJ-craving crowd. Later this summer, Straits will have its grand reopening for what will be a newly renovated and expanded lounge and restaurant area. -- Metro Bars & Clubs, June 16, 2010

Best Happy Hour

Happy Hour at Straits runs 3-6pm, with $3 Kirins and $3-$5 small plates. Translation: Before the hipster throngs invade, you can mingle with business types and moneyed shoppers, while gorging on seriously rippin' pan-Asian fusion concoctions. Just choose your vice: Roti Prata, sushi, ginger soda or the femme-fatale employees who scamper about the establishment with the greatest of ease.

Best Asian Fusion
Singaporean cuisine doesn't have to try to do fusion. It comes naturally since the food draws on Chinese, Thai, Indonesian, Nonya and Malaysian cuisines. Straits Restaurant was one of the first to serve this polyglot food in Silicon Valley and it remains an exemplar of the cuisine, whether you call it Asian fusion, Singaporean or just good food.
