The new Siam could change the way you look at Thai cuisine
In my more than four years as Metro's restaurant critic, I've reviewed a total of one Thai restaurant. What's that you say? Silicon Valley is full of Thai restaurants? But over the years I've tried in vain to find one that goes beyond the same old pad thai, tom yum soup and pad prik king, one that offers something distinctive to set it apart from the multitudes. I'm still looking. More

Exploring a lesser-known spot for Japanese culture in the South Bay
Don’t get me wrong. I think San Jose's Japantown is great. The neighborhood has a real sense of history and a strong community spirit. But as much as I enjoy walking down Jackson Street and checking out all the cool shops and restaurants, I've been spending more time in another Japanese enclave across town. More

'Nhau'cuisine fuses Cajun and Vietnamese cuisine
I admit when I first heard about Gumbo Jumbo, a Cajun-Vietnamese fusion restaurant in downtown San Jose, I dismissed it as one of the most improbable restaurant concepts I'd ever heard of, right up there with Icelandic-Mexican food or vegan barbecue. More

There’s a lot of good food to be had in these shopping centers, but you have to know how to separate the good from the bland. Shopping-center owners love renting space to restaurant chains and franchises because they’re known quantities and perceived as a lower risk. But predictability doesn’t make for very interesting eating, so I avoid these places. Instead, I look for independently owned restaurants that bear the personal tastes and quirks of the people who run them. BB’s Small World Cafe definitely falls into that category. More

While it won't win any style points, Casablanca's Cafe's falafel is the one of Silicon Valley's best.
Casablanca’s doesn’t aspire to fine dining, but what it offers instead is some truly great sandwiches, including one of the best falafel sandwiches I’ve ever had. More
