The new Siam could change the way you look at Thai cuisine
By Stett Holbrook (Mar 11, 2009)
In my more than four years as Metro's restaurant critic, I've reviewed a total of one Thai restaurant. What's that you say? Silicon Valley is full of Thai restaurants? But over the years I've tried in vain to find one that goes beyond the same old pad thai, tom yum soup and pad prik king, one that offers something distinctive to set it apart from the multitudes. I'm still looking. More

Stylish Opa! captures perfect Willow Glen vibe for the times
By Stett Holbrook (Mar 11, 2009)
Opening a restaurant as a swirling black hole of financial doom threatens to engulf the country has got to be nerve-wracking. But whether it's luck, a sound business plan or both, 6-week-old Opa! restaurant seems perfectly attuned to these rocky economic times. More

San Jose neighborhood is a little-known spot for great Mexican food
By Stett Holbrook (Mar 11, 2009)
While they share the same street name and are just a mile and a half apart, the Willow Glen and Willow Street neighborhoods might as well be in different countries. More

Exploring a lesser-known spot for Japanese culture in the South Bay
By Stett Holbrook (Mar 11, 2009)
Don’t get me wrong. I think San Jose's Japantown is great. The neighborhood has a real sense of history and a strong community spirit. But as much as I enjoy walking down Jackson Street and checking out all the cool shops and restaurants, I've been spending more time in another Japanese enclave across town. More

Four years later, another look at one of Silicon Valley's more daring Mexican menus
By Stett Holbrook (Mar 11, 2009)
Two women dropped their shopping bags of brand-name loot and sat down at one of Consuelo Mexico Bistro's outdoor tables as a waiter handed them menus. The sun was shining outside the Santana Row restaurant and the patio was filling up with hungry shoppers. More

Essadki brothers recapture the hospitality of their native country at Morocco's
By Stett Holbrook (Mar 11, 2009)
Brothers Jay and Sham Essadki have created at Morocco's the kind of restaurant that downtown San Jose needs more of: distinctive food cooked and served by people with a personal investment in the happiness of their customers. More

'Nhau'cuisine fuses Cajun and Vietnamese cuisine
By Stett Holbrook (Mar 11, 2009)
I admit when I first heard about Gumbo Jumbo, a Cajun-Vietnamese fusion restaurant in downtown San Jose, I dismissed it as one of the most improbable restaurant concepts I'd ever heard of, right up there with Icelandic-Mexican food or vegan barbecue. More
Restaurants

There’s a lot of good food to be had in these shopping centers, but you have to know how to separate the good from the bland. Shopping-center owners love renting space to restaurant chains and franchises because they’re known quantities and perceived as a lower risk. But predictability doesn’t make for very interesting eating, so I avoid these places. Instead, I look for independently owned restaurants that bear the personal tastes and quirks of the people who run them. BB’s Small World Cafe definitely falls into that category. More

While it won't win any style points, Casablanca's Cafe's falafel is the one of Silicon Valley's best.
By Stett Holbrook (Mar 3, 2009)
Casablanca’s doesn’t aspire to fine dining, but what it offers instead is some truly great sandwiches, including one of the best falafel sandwiches I’ve ever had. More
