There’s a lot to say about Whispers Cafe and Creperie, the new breakfast, lunch and dinner spot in downtown San Jose. Whispers has two other locations—one on Brokaw Road in San Jose and another in Belmont. The downtown San Jose Whispers is located along Paseo de San Antonio, next door to the San Jose Repertory Theatre.

Whispers features a broad menu of sweet and savory crepes, breakfast standards, sandwiches and salads as well as some dinner items, served in generous portions with counter style service. Ordering at Whispers may seem a little daunting at first glance, as a large colorful menu takes up most of the wall behind the register, but helpful to-go menus aid in sifting through the extensive options to find what you’re craving.

Whispers’ sweet and savory crepes are the centerpiece of the menu. The sweet crepes are served with a side of ice cream and whipped cream. The Whisper crepe ($7.75) is delectable, with nutella chocolate, fresh strawberries and bananas with cinnamon and brown sugar. Other appealing sweet crepes included the Half Moon ($6.75) with sliced peaches in a honey orange glaze and the Coolum with raspberries, strawberries and marshmallows topped with a white chocolate sauce. Savory crepe creations range from the basic ham and cheddar cheese to the Kari ($9.75) with curry chicken, red onions, mushrooms and bell peppers with mango chutney. The Alcatraz ($9.95) with shrimp, mozzarella, mushrooms, onions and garlic sauteed in wine with avocado on top was rich and filling with enough to take home.

The sandwich menu has the expected staples like a turkey club, BLT and chicken or steak philly, as well as wrap specialties such as the vegetarian lavash wrap or tri tip and guacamole in a chili tomato wrap. Whispers also serves a full breakfast of egg scrambles, omelettes, benedicts, French toast, pancakes and waffles.

The cafe has already gathered a noticeable lunch crowd. On my visit a mix of business workers, students and downtown residents were scattered around the tables and bar seating areas. With wifi, a full bar and a dining room naturally lit by floor-to-ceiling windows that are perfect for people watching, Whispers is an attractive spot for working or meeting over lunch.
