Description

Just last week at BFD, Pennywise gave a shout out onstage to Bad Brains, and it was strange to hear the band's new singer Zoli Teglas talk about them like they were some big secret. But damn, maybe he's right. Despite the fact that they are in some circles one of the most beloved hardcore bands of all time, in others the groundbreaking D.C. punks are virtually unknown—or even worse, dismissed as some kind of oddball cult band. That's never been a problem in the South Bay, where popular locals Insolence have proudly touted Bad Brains' reggae-punk fusion as a huge influence on their own music for years. (More recently, Them Rude Boys have also acknowledged their debt to Bad Brains as they've come up in the scene.) Even our Bad Brains cover band goes way back—formed by members of not only Insolence but also Skinlab and Hippie Aggression, Regulator began pounding out tribute sets over a decade ago. - Steve Palopoli sanjose.com
