Recycle Books

In a time when independent bookstores are facing more challenges than ever. Recycle Books has maintained its place as a Silicon Valley institution. After 40 years, it’s even expanded. How do they do it?

Perhaps, as the old punchline goes, “volume.” Recycle has a remarkable selection for a used bookstore.

“I never see the same thing twice,” says owner Eric Johnson. “Every day we see new books coming in on topics I never knew existed. It’s amazing the variety of books out there. You never get bored.”

Browsers of the store’s squeezed-to-maximum-capacity shelves are not likely to see the same thing twice either—thanks to a huge effort on the part of the staff that involves moving mountains ... of books.

“We really work hard to clean out older stock so people aren’t seeing the same thing over and over again,” Johnson says.

The fact that there’s always something new to find keeps locals coming back regularly, checking out the stacks and petting Zenda, the staff cat. Johnson sees all types. The common denominator? “Just people who are insane about books.”
