The Portola Art Gallery presents "A Traveler’s Impressions," a collection of oil paintings by contemporary San Francisco-based artist Oksana Johnson. The exhibit focuses on Johnson's impressions from her travels in Europe, Hawaii, and California. Highlights of the show are striking new impressionist paintings of the Bay Area and France, including the work "Evening Stroll over the Bridge," which will be presented at the artist's reception on September 22.

Johnson is a Russian-American impressionist who has lived on the Peninsula and in The City since 1997. Whether painting from her studio overlooking the Pacific Ocean, or working en plein air as a traveler in Normandy, San Diego, or the Hawaiian islands, she tries to convey her emotional impressions rather than simply depicting the scene. Her style has been influenced by many Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters - including Degas, Monet, Renoir, Morisot, Van Gogh, Bonnard, and Korovin - as well as years of continuing experimentation and sensitive observations as a traveler, artist, and human being.

Johnson shares: "My primary focus is on painting scenes that capture special moments in time. My philosophy is 'staying in and appreciating' the moment. Painting has taught me to focus on what is happening now, and to pay greater attention not only to the outside world but also to my own responses to it. I have learned that life becomes happier and more meaningful that way."

She continues: "Simple, everyday things have hidden beauty and joy. I want to share these features and feelings with my viewers as a reminder not to take these special moments for granted. I hope that, in this way, I can contribute to helping others find greater happiness in our complex world."

Oksana Johnson works primarily in oils, painting on a variety of surfaces such as linen, canvas, wooden panels, and metal. Johnson has studied with a range of master painters in Russia, Western Europe, and the United States. She is an award-winning artist who has participated in multiple shows and exhibitions, and has also curated an art show at the Filoli Historic House & Garden. During the last year, she has been featured as a "Top Artist" and "Most Collected Artist" at UGallery, the curated global online gallery that represents the nation's top emerging and mid-career artists. Johnson’s works are in private collections in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. More information about her artwork is available online at http://www.oksanajohnson.com.
