While San Jose's '90s club scene may have been riddled with too much funk-metal-rap, we did produce a number of brilliant stoner doom metal bands, most notably Sleep (whose guitarist Matt Pike would go on to form High on Fire). But even before that, there was stoner metal band Asbestosdeath who were way ahead of their time. Some of Asbestosdeath became Sleep, but guitarist Tom Choi formed Noothgrush, whose slow, powerhouse, doom metal licks built them a local and national following. They broke up in 2001, but have played a few reunion shows since. Now there's talk of a possible new album which the world would likely welcome-doom metal is more popular now than ever.
