Bill Sherry Picked to Head Team San Jose

Could Mineta Get a Name Change?

The proposed name change would have the airport’s new name as the Norman Y. Mineta San Jose/Silicon Valley International Airport. While Silicon Valley could be a draw, the name might also be more than a mouthful.

Terminal B Awarded LEED Silver

Mineta Airport’s new Terminal B has been awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification for its innovative approaches to energy conservation and recycling. Throughout the building, energy efficiency surpassed energy usage standards by 16 percent. Recycled materials featured prominently in the construction of the Terminal too, diverting 920 tons of discarded construction materials from landfills.

Police Tackle Laser Problem

Dangerous Laser Pointer Incidents on the Rise

San Jose Airport Terminal on Lockdown after Security Breach
Local Jan 14, 2011, by Danny WoolMineta Airport’s Terminal B was on lockdown Thursday night after a woman exited the secure area and attempted to re-enter through the exit line, bypassing a second screening. Because of the incident, all of the passengers in the terminal were forced to go through a second screening. Even passengers already on planes were told to leave the aircraft and go through screening again.

Mineta’s Bomb-Sniffing Dog Set to Retire

Flight from Mineta Diverted to Albequerque
News Dec 09, 2010, by Silicon Valley NewsroomA Continental Airlines flight from Mineta to Houston was diverted to Albuquerque because of a disruptive passenger, who threatened to commit suicide. Aviation police removed the passenger from the plane, and the FBI conducted interviews of the passengers to get a clearer picture of what happened in the air.

The city is considering lowering the living wage requirement for airport workers and privatizing police and firefighter services there. The airport suffered more than the other two Bay Area airports during the recession, and it is facing a $1.3 billion bill for its recent renovation project. The South Bay AFL-CIO Labor Council is challenging the city on the living wage issue.

Adios Mexicana Airlines

Normally, a problem some people face is how to get from Mexico into the United States. Not so this weekend. As the clock struck midnight on Saturday, Mexicana Airlines stopped flying out of San Jose’s Mineta Airport, leaving dozens of passengers stranded. They had few options. The airline also, which is facing bankruptcy, also stopped flying out of San Francisco and Oakland.
