SubZERO Fest Blitzes Downtown
SINCE ALL COMPUTERS can be simplified down to the base-2 binary system of ones and zeros, 01SJ turned out to be a perfect nom de plume for a Silicon Valley art biennial based in downtown San Jose. Similar festivals exploring the crossovers between art, new media, technology and critical theory exist in numerous other international locales, especially Europe, where such events like Ars Electronica, transmediale, Futuresonic and the Dutch Electronic Arts Festival in Rotterdam virtually take over their prospective cities for a week or so. South Bay musician Angie Thurman of Stars Misplaced talks about her future plans
THERE COMES a point in every artist’s life when he or she simply hits a wall. Picasso’s hiatus following World War II, John Lennon’s “Lost Weekend” from 1973 to 1975 and Hemingway’s 10-year literary absence after writing For Whom the Bell Tolls are all examples of an artist’s need for a temporary departure from the creative realm. Masters of nasty rap and country perform at VooDoo Lounge in San Jose
THIS is the story of two men who changed music. Maybe not for the better. But maybe so. According to the official story, they couldn’t have been more different. One was a longhaired white redneck whose career as a Nashville hitmaker was shadowed by reckless behavior and accusations of racism. The other was a successful African-American R&B songwriter who had a hit of his own in the 1960s. More

A visit to JJ's Blues in Santa Clara
The lone singer was bathed in soft red light, an acoustic guitar perched on his knee. He swayed to a mellow beat and sad lyrics. Gene Washington, also known as Mr. Blues, sat on a stool on the raised stage at venerable blues haven JJ’s Blues, a snifter of brandy in his hand. More
