Cowboy poetry meets free jazz in a fancy studio in Willow Glen (January, 2009)
By Gary Singh (Apr 10, 2009)
ON A LAZY CHRISTMAS EVE, Gordon Stevens guides me through the corridors of the Music & Entertainment Business Center, a masterpiece of lightweight '50s kitsch architecture at 1202 Lincoln Ave. in Willow Glen. His family's company, Stevens Music, operated at this address from 1961 until 1984... More

By Gary Singh (Apr 10, 2009)
As a hazed prelude to Flipper's 2006 San Jose show, Gary Singh remembers their last appearance in 1991. More

In the music world, PK is a San Luis Obispo–based (by way of Santa Cruz) quintet fusing anomalous and varied time signatures, vocals akin to a softer version of Dashboard Confessional’s Chris Carrabba, and a savvy use of breakdowns and bounding beats. More

San Jose’s oddest rock band takes up residency at the Blank Club
By Steve Palopoli (Apr 7, 2009)
San Jose band Suicidal Barfly's sound bears an uncanny resemblance to its name. Jen Chambers’ voice recalls Cat Power or Helium’s Mary Timony, whiskey-soaked and sometimes creeping through a song as if she might trail off completely at any minute, only to rise back into an emotional pitch in the very next line. By Michael S. Gant (Mar 31, 2009)
One of the biggest names in children’s lit, Lemony Snicket (a.k.a. Daniel Handler), has a new musical project with comic-sinister undertones called The Composer Is Dead. He has released the tale as an illustrated book, and the SAN FRANCISCO SYMPHONY has commissioned a concert version from composer Nathaniel Stookey. For a family performance, the symphony will call on Snicket to narrative the tale while Edwin Outwater conducts. More

By Steve Palopoli (Mar 24, 2009)
Barack Obama: the ska president? That’s what it seems like to Curtis Meacham, guitarist, vocalist and head songwriter for San Jose’s longtime ska band Monkey, which was booked on the Ska is Dead 4 tour, which happened to start the day after Obama’s inauguration. More

With ‘Salutary,’ San Jose band Pericardium pumps out an eclectic mix of metal, rock and psychedelia
By Claire Young (Mar 19, 2009)
The past year and a half has been a roller-coaster ride for San Jose’s Pericardium. The young rock act has transitioned from a keys- and violin-heavy amalgam to a standard four-piece with two guitars, a bass and drums. And while the musical stylings of the band have morphed along with the lineup changes, the inspiration and drive to create out-of-the-box sounds has remained the same More
