Santa Clara County Fairgrounds opens a new arena for concert on Aug. 2 with A Flock of Seagulls, Tommy Tutone and more
IN THE Silicon Valley, it seems like everything is either really big or really small. Take music venues. We have the HP Pavilion, Shoreline and others; for small, just walk downtown on a Saturday night, and you can hear bands playing at many of our intimate watering holes. These places bring in huge stars and those just starting out but not those in between. So it was nice to hear that the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds is opening a new arena venue that seats 5,500 people. In combination with the newly renovated San Jose Civic, this gives us two midsize venues for fans who like it “just right.” More

Crüe Fest 2 reminds us why heavy metal will endure
IN THE EARLY ’90s, a rock band from San Jose resurrected a timeless heavy-metal formula: slow, detuned guitar riffs plunged into darkness alongside ghostly vocal howls, all set to a painfully lumbering drum beat. Sound familiar? It should— this was the blueprint used by the high priests of heavy metal themselves, Black Sabbath, circa 1968. Only this time, a South Bay power-trio called Sleep, led by guitarist Matt Pike, was creating music even slower and heavier. More

I know what you’re thinking: zombies. And you’re right. Enter Jesse Erickson, who directed the new video for “Coffin Factory,” the first single off the San Jose band’s sophomore disc, Don’t Throw Me Away. The video will premiere tonight at the VooDoo Lounge. “We made a whole zombie movie,” says Will Sprott, singer and songwriter for the Mumlers. “I’m pretty excited about it.” More
