Silicon Alleys explores the history of a radio alternative
By Gary Singh (Sep 3, 2009)
NEXT MONTH, KFJC-FM (89.7), that rabble-rousing station at Foothill College, celebrates its golden anniversary. At 8pm on Oct. 20, 1959, station manager Bob Ballou uttered the first words ever on that station, broadcasting from a broom closet at the old Foothill campus on El Camino Real in Mountain View. There exists no recording of what he originally said, but Mr. Ballou will be back on the air on Oct. 20 to mark the 50th anniversary. More

On the hunt for San Jose's greatest unsung rock hero
By Steve Palopoli (Sep 2, 2009)
KLAUS FLOURIDE has learned to expect anything from the Legendary Stardust Cowboy, San Jose’s best-kept cult-music secret. Most famous as a founding member of revered Bay Area punk band the Dead Kennedys, Flouride has been playing bass since 1997 for the Legendary Stardust Cowboy, or “The Ledge,” as he’s known to most of his friends and acquaintances. More

Os Mutantes Promote Brazilian Beat at Outside Lands Festival
By Staff (Aug 27, 2009)
ABOUT HALFWAY down the 68-act list of artists slated to rock Golden Gate Park at this weekend’s Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival, there’s a name that sticks out like a sore thumb. It’s not Pearl Jam, MIA or even recent Beastie Boys replacements Tenacious D but rather a band as influential as it is obscure, and one that, for fans of psychedelic rock, is a monolith of the genre’s proud history. More

Silicon Alleys reports on the Sacred Leaf Benefit
By Gary Singh (Aug 26, 2009)
LAST WEEKEND saw another zenith in what seems like a long string of reunions celebrating San Jose’s music scene of 20 years ago. This time, we’re talking about the last half of the ’80s and the legendary alternative club One Step Beyond. Known throughout the land as “One Step,” the place was a haven for many alternative types in those days: punks, goth kids, ’80s New Wavers, mods, rockabilly dudes, metalheads or basically anyone subjugated in high school by the jocks and cheerleaders and who wanted to fine-tune his or her teenage angst for use later in life. More

Masters of nasty rap and country perform at VooDoo Lounge in San Jose
By Steve Palopoli (Aug 21, 2009)
THIS is the story of two men who changed music. Maybe not for the better. But maybe so. According to the official story, they couldn’t have been more different. One was a longhaired white redneck whose career as a Nashville hitmaker was shadowed by reckless behavior and accusations of racism. The other was a successful African-American R&B songwriter who had a hit of his own in the 1960s. More

Dubstep dominates a Sunday night with South Bay Dub Massive
By Staff (Aug 20, 2009)
SUNDAYS might seem a little quiet in downtown San Jose, but not if you know where to look. At Mission Ale House not one but two DJs work the crowd. In the front, Alonzo spins house music. In the back is South Bay Dub Massive hosted by Audio Dru and guest DJs that he has brought in from around the area. More

Smoke Tiki Lounge hosts an Aug. 21–22 fundraiser and One Step Beyond club reunion
By Gary Singh (Aug 6, 2009)
REUNIONS ARE in the air these days. Last November and January respectively saw reunions for two legendary San Jose alternative-music clubs—F/X and Marsugi’s—so now it only makes sense that another slice of that same countercultural circle of folks has emerged to get together for a worthy cause. The Sacred Leaf benefit will take place over two nights, Aug. 21–22, at Smoke Tiki Lounge in downtown San Jose. More
