Description

Celebrate the Year of the Snake with a day of Asian New Year traditions at the Oakland Museum of California on Sunday, February 17, 2013 from 12 to 4:30 pm. Featuring activities for the entire family, the 12th annual celebration honors California's diversity and celebrates the many time-honored traditions of Asian communities. The event is included with Museum admission.

The day's performances include: a Malaysian 24 Seasons drumming; the Red Panda Acrobats and Oakland Youth Orchestra String Quartet; martial arts and Chinese yo-yo demonstrations; and traditional lion and dragon dances.

The lineup includes dazzling illusions by The Magic of Jade; stunning Balinese dancers; and sing-a-long songs in English, Mandarin, and Spanish with Miss Janet the Planet and Uncle Charlie. Hands-on activities include Tibetan prayer flag and New Year 'lucky money' red envelope making, and face painting with Chinese Opera artists. Demonstrations include: Japanese mochi pounding with Kagami Kai; Vietnamese spring roll making; mahjong lessons from Sara Levy Linden; and a dance lesson for the viral hit 'Gangnam Style' by UC Berkeley's Korean Performance Group.

Bring the whole family and celebrate the Lunar New Year at OMCA! All performances and demonstrations are included with Museum admission. The event is made possible by Chevron.
