On March 16, 1968, American soldiers violated, mutilated and slaughtered hundreds of unarmed South Vietnamese men, women and children. The military then attempted to cover up the heinous war crime. Not one perpetrator saw the inside of a jail cell. The event is known as the My Lai Massacre and is the basis for an engrossing new composition by faculty composer Jonathan Berger for the Kronos Quartet. The piece features traditional Vietnamese percussion and audio recordings to tell the story of a helicopter pilot who attempted to stop his fellow soldiers and was denigrated for his efforts.
