Description

Classical music often has a stuffy rep; a group that has always transcended that image, though, is San Francisco's Kronos Quartet. The string quartet has stayed cutting edge for 40 years by taking an experimental approach to the classical genre. Their adventurous, innovative ways are reflected in a diverse list of collaborators, who include David Bowie, Tom Waits, Bjork and Thelonius Monk-the quartet even appeared on Sesame Street in the mid '80s. Kronos' latest album, Aheym, has compositions written by the National's guitarist Bryce Dessner. The title track is an avant-garde piece that bustles with furious energy. (Aaron Carnes)
