Description
Iceberger Gallery is proud to announce new works by Oakland-basedartist Jen Merrill in Demikhov's Hands of Glory.
Using malleable materials like paper, acrylic paint and linen thread,
Merrill deconstructs the surface of the flat plane with a scalpel to
create three-dimensional representations of the human form.
Inspired by scientific anatomical studies and the drawings and
paintings of baroque minimalism, Merrill's handling of the work is at
once reductive and ornamental, the details carefully chosen and finely
rendered with her scalpel. The pieces combine sterile environments
with eerie, sometimes humorous figures that search for a world beyond
the glass case of a natural history museum. They are simultaneously
clinical and viscerally powerful, representing a battle between the
stoic and unruly body, the internal and the physical self, and the
conscience versus emotional restraint.
