Thanks to iMovie and other software like it, when some bands reveal how little they spent on their great-looking, slickly edited videos these days, I can't believe it. Not so with Hella Jalapenos. However little they tell me they spent on the clip for "Stood Up," I'll believe them (to be fair, they play it pretty tongue in cheek). But while it might not have a great video, "Stood Up" is a great song. Vocalist Monica Smith, keyboardist Ruben Bravo and drummer AJ Montoya are all from the San Jose ska band Trouble in Paradise, which broke up last year, and they've turned down the punk part of TiP's sound and turned up the piano-driven pop. The result is a hip, catchy sound with deep grooves that's often (as on the disco-ready "Burning Up the Keys") hella danceable. - Steve Palopoli sanjose.com
