PAPIER MÂCHÉ HAT BLOCK WORKSHOP
JULY 10, THURSDAY 6-9pm , JULY 12 + 19, SATURDAYS 12-5
Make a cocktail hat block
Learn to create a well made Papier-mâché hat block. Charming hand made paper blocks from the nineteen- twenties are the inspiration for this method of construction. Modern sculpting techniques and materials combined with this inspiration have led me to develop a fun new method for fabricating custom made hat blocks. These blocks are durable, lightweight, waterproof and include a blocking base with rope line grooves for an easy blocking experience. To encourage the completion of your project, we will make mini cocktail size hat blocks building over starter forms which students can customize to a high level of individuality. As time permits we will block buckram on either the student made or studio blocks and discuss wiring and finishing hat bases. Materials included for one block and enough buckram to block the new shape. Millinery students will leave this workshop with a new technique for creating highly customized specialty hat blocks as needed! This workshop is geared towards students who have already taken a hat blocking course but it is open to beginners as well. Space is limited to 5 students

Learn to make your own fabulous millinery flowers using the technique many refer to as “French flower making.” This traditional method uses heated shaping tools to produce an infinite variety of flowers. In this workshop we will examine flower structure and learn what characteristics capture the essence of specific flower types. I’ll address questions about pattern making as well as painting and dyeing. Individual student aesthetics will drive the direction of the class, so whether you want to explore realism or fantasy, the choice is yours. All levels of experience are welcome. Beginners will gain a solid understanding of the French flower making technique, while those with more experience can use this day for refining techniques, gathering tips, and exploring personal style. Fee includes materials, patterns, and a list of sources. All tools are provided for use in class.
