The last five years have seen an explosion of indie-rock bands influenced by the Smiths, bringing some straight-up, stay-in-school highmindedness to the alternapop scene. Some specialize in Morrissey's blend of sass and sadness. Others are more serious, like locals Fossil Tree. Though fairly new, they're honing that mystical Morrissey/Mar alchemy of complex, catchy guitar-rock and literate lyrics. I especially like the unexpected, druggy "ba-ba-ba-ba" breakdown in their otherwise driving "Greats and Grands." Over the Bridge and Skyway View also perform. - Steve Palopoli sanjose.com
