In December 2008, the newly formed FLUX53, began the physical, emotional and creative process of redeveloping this once thriving community performance space. Continuing in the spirit of the EGYPT, Our MISSION is to build community and encourage access to current performing and visual arts throughout the Oakland and Greater Bay Area.
In our first months FLUX53 featured clowns, jugglers, and trapeze artists; electric guitars and ukuleles; painting, metal sculpture, and photography; musical saws and a hip-hop talent show. Our first "jazz" night ran the gamut from old-school bebop to post-millennial art-noise in a single evening. Our first rock night featured a guitar made out of a shovel and at least one drummer in a gorilla suit. And the audience is as diverse and eclectic as the art, as evidenced in our recurring improvised music jam. That's FLUX53 – put everything under one roof, stir, and enjoy. And everyone who's shown up has made the same request, MORE !
Producing exhibitions, workshops, movie nights, live music and theatrical events in all genres, our goal as a collective theater and gallery, is to build upon what the EGYPT Theater offered this community as a center of culture, art and an open forum for the creative spirit.
